Greenhouse gas emissions from land use, land use change and forestry
Through its land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) activities, the EU currently removes a net total of 249 Mt CO2e from the atmosphere, equivalent to 7% of its total greenhouse gas emissions. The sector will play a crucial role in helping the EU achieve net zero emissions by 2050, but doing so will require reversing the EU’s current decreasing carbon sink trend. The future trend with existing measures (WEM) in place shows some further reduction in removals with an average of 200 Mt CO2e per year. Removals would increase by 3% with the introduction of additional measures (WAM).
