Total greenhouse gas emission trends and projections in Europe

Greenhouse gas emissions in the EU decreased by 32% between 1990 and 2020, a notable overachievement of the EU’s 2020 reduction target of 20%. Preliminary estimates indicate that emissions rebounded in 2021 but remain below pre-COVID-19 levels. The 2021 emissions increase was driven by the recovery from the pandemic and a greater uptake of energy sources with higher emissions in the second half of 2021.
